Site: Yizkor Workshops
Maya Ciarrocchi (Canada/USA)
November 13, 15 & 16, 2022
Sidney & Gertrude Zack Gallery
In their collaboration, Site: Yizkor, Jewish Canadian multimedia artist Maya Ciarrocchi and composer Andrew Conklin explore questions like: Who honours the spaces left by the dead? How and why do people, cultures, and identities disappear?
Maya Ciarrocchi will lead a series of companion workshops connected to the Site: Yizkor exhibit and performance. In this writing workshop, participants are prompted to "describe a vanished place of personal importance,” and "describe your dreams for the future.” These responses may be in the form of simple illustrative observations or sketches. Participants will be invited to share their reflections with the workshop group, to contributed to shared documentation of the project, and may be part of the public performance to be held on November 19. This activity creates a bond within the group that reverberates long after the event.
All materials will be provided. No previous experience is required and people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities are invited to attend.
Co-presented with the Sidney & Gertrude Zack Gallery and in partnership with the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre.
Site: Yizkor is presented with the generous support of the Jewish Community Foundation.
