Chutzpah! kicks off its Monday daytime series of workshops and public outreach events with Yankl & Der Beanstalk, a Yiddish holiday panto co-created by Chutzpah! Festival favourite Tamara Micner, a celebrated writer, performer and theatre-maker in London England, who hails from Vancouver, BC. In partnership with rice & beans theatre, through their ongoing DBLSPK program exploring multilingual theatre works, the Yankl creative team will present a work-in-progress section of the panto from their studio in London via video link, followed by a facilitated workshop discussion with the audience.
About DBLSPK: DBLSPK highlights the linguistic and cultural diversity of our theatre community. The series began in 2017 with rice & beans and Boca Del Lupo, inspired by our common interest in investigating what is lost and gained in translation. Working with artists who include elements of translation or multilingual storytelling, we examine the relationship between language and culture within performance. During this recurrent event, excerpts from a play are performed in both the original and translated languages. In addition to sections of staged readings, the artists engage with the audience in a conversation, taking a deep dive into research topics related to the project. Past projects have featured artists who work with French, Spanish, Cantonese, Punjabi, Farsi, Korean, Polish, and Tagalog. This is the first DBLSPK exploring Yiddish.
