UBC DIALOGUES: VANCOUVER
Chutzpah! and UBC Alumni Affairs present
Advocate or Activist: What is the best way to effect change?
From debates and lobbyists to boycotts and protesters, political action takes many forms. Should athletes refuse to compete against athletes from politically contentious countries? Should we burn great books from authors whose religious beliefs we find repugnant? Should we restrict artists from presenting their work? Should we reject academics purely on the basis of their religious or political beliefs or the country they are from?Is there a time and place for righteous indignation? Or is it more effective to engage in dialogue with those we oppose?
UBC Alumni Affairs and the Chutzpah Festival have partnered for this provocative dialogue hear from leading experts in the fields of arts, academics and athletics and find out if there is a best way to effect change.
Hear from the following UBC experts:
Dr. Mark Warren, UBC Professor of Political Science and Harold and Dorrie Merilees Chair in the Study of Democracy
Nettie Wild, BFA’76, Canadian Documentary Filmmaker
David Dunnison, BSc'81, BSF'83, Rower (selected for the boycotted 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow) and Vice President of Business Development, 6N Silicon
